It was wonderful to see that the residence Palladium was right there in the city....ALthough bit expensive Palladium gives you all the facilities which you might want for youself. A full fledged gym, cafeteria and 24 hrs security. The NYU ID card can be used at cafeteria, laundry, university cafe, library and on the campus.

Classes begin on 28th Jan and it was good to attend the valuation class of Damodaran. If you come to NYU stern, it is worth to take Damodaran class. There are several other good courses and all depends upon your career choice and interest to learn.

This year, there are around 33 exchange students from different schools around the world. 3 from HEC, 8 from LBS, 2 from ESADE etc....

We do not have Piano bar here but every Thursday night, there is a beer blast from 6 PM for MBA students and so it is the time to meet with other MBA students.....

So far so good. Will write more as and when have time :)))

Cheers
Gaj

12 Months in HEC MBA

It is exactly 12 months now when most of us arrived at HEC Campus. That was our first day and I am sure most of students today will have seen the difference.

Some takeaways until now is that I have developed life long friends, learned from peers, professors, alumni, business leaders.

I still remember in year 2002-2003 when I was exploring option of doing an MBA, some of my friends told me something interesting. They told me that you do MBA for an experience. MBA does bring career change but it also gives an opportunity to gain invaluable experience. What is also true is that 16 months HEC MBA is a unique experience and will not come back again.....

I am in India, ready to move to New York for an exchange and still when I receive email from fellowmates, I can clearly see the excitement involved in the discussion. I am sure a reunion in June 13th during graduation party would be thrilling....

With this wishing you all a very happy new year 2008. Wishing you all also success in your studies, career and personal life.

Love
Gaj

HEC MBA until now

It has been long time since anything was written on this blog.

I think with 7 months almost going to complete with HEC, I defintely see what this program has already given to us. I think today when I have started my work again in form of summer internship I can see the differnce in the way I look at things. I am sure it is same for all of us. At the same time I also realized that it would be difficult to be exposed to similar diversity like we have at HEC.

I would like to start this discussion and would like to come back later on other subjects............

Whenever I take to penning my thoughts down, I usually wonder what to write about - nature, future, world issues?! Invariably it is always something which is dominantly on my mind at the moment... And this time, it is this break of one week. Unimaginable in an MBA isnt it?
But thank God for the French authorities, who for once decided that this was the 'legal holiday' week of the year, giving most of us a breather! Well, not literally, with the Marketing project still weighing down heavily, and some real time targets to be met, but all in all a slightly more laid back week than the ones that preceded it....

What I am looking forward to ? Not much, really...Just the below :

- Sleeping through 8 a.m and 9:40 am on all the five 'week' days
- Not rushing to ATAC at 19:30 hrs in an effort to pick up some last minute supplies!
- Not getting dressed in formals for another loong presentation
- Not whizzing through lunch in 15 mins - my only proper meal of the day!
- Not looking at the clock showing 20:30 hrs in the MBA building waiting for the day to get over somehow...
- Not trying to get my working group together for the next meeting - everyone's away anyway!
- Not trying to rack my head at 00:00 hrs about taking a pick - Strategy or Financial markets, which one to nail first
- Not chewing on my pencil during a cover letter workshop
- Not struggling to keep my eyes open through Management Accounting lectures
- Not trying to synergise my energies through an OB lecture - which actually leaves me wondering about the whole purpose of the course
- Not trying to hopelessly grapple with my linguistic abilities in the French class - Jees! I am still working on my Hindi!
- Not reaching on time to realise that the last FT is gone - I mean, look at the multiple uses of a newspaper, for instance, my room looks quite clean without a pile of unread FTs..
- Thinking of ways to drag in the coffee vending machine into MBA 11, right through the Corporate Finance lecture

What I will do, however, would be more on these lines :

- Try to "spot the difference" between multiple drafts of my innovatively designed CV, for updating the CV platform (Or is the deadline gone already ?!)
- Count the total no. of trees on campus and try my hand at carving some "tree art"
- Try to 'run'(jog?) for fitness purposes, and not just to class - 15 minutes behind time
- Try and figure out if I can actually spot some stars from the piano bar balcony, when not intoxicated
- Figure out the number cars that are missing from infront of expansiel during the break
- Walk down Jouy to see if there's a world beyond ATAC
- Try and finally figure out the SNCF rail system
- Complete my French homework
- Try to intentionally take 5 hours and 40 mins to 'read' the next Strategy case
- Doze off within 'Bearley' sitting right infront of me on my desk
- Open my letter box

And the feeling that elsewhere in the world, millions of people would be boarding early morning trains to office, taking flights to unknown countries, sailing ships away on expeditions and maybe even crocodile hunting! while am here a la 'good old' Jouy trying to figure out different ways to work out the various items on my agenda....is an amazing feeling by itself!!
To be honest...Looks like I have a very busy week ahead – I mean, come on! Look at the
“not to do” list, it’s longer than the “to-do” one…(Am happy if that makes you befriend the green-eyed monster;)
I guess I should get busy then…..Someone wise once said (Or was it me?) – To be able to nothing creatively is a great art in itself, and demands a lot of time and dedication… Maybe you guys should give it a try yourself. Watch this space, and when am back again, I’ll probably let you know how the much-awaited week was like…Have a great week!!!

How do you manage your up & downs?

Hi Guys,

Today, I discovered two websites www.grainesdechangement.com & www.reportersdespoirs.org (sorry it is only in French for the moment). For the English speaking people you can check www.positivenewsus.org/, www.planetpositive.net, http://magazine-directory.com/Utne-Reader.htm, www.odemagazine.com.

It was really energizing to read all these good news, all good reasons to believe that we can change the world, that solutions and not only problems exist. It is sometimes difficult to remain positive, to fight and fight again to achieve your desires when you are told everyday that it will not work, that you are wasting your time and nothing can be done about it. I think that may be, receive their newsletters with all these good news will help me to stay committed, motivated & dedicated to my renewable energy objective. Of course, in business school we are taught to sell our souls to the devil and only think about the bottom line. But when do you add Ethics to Economics? Our NPV of happiness have increased at the end of the trip so the project was worth taking. The options to go to Barcelona payed off well as we take the coming weeks with better poise and relaxed mind.

This entry is to share our experience with batchmates who due to personal or professinal reasons could not join us.

We took Vueling from CDG to Barcelona. Thanks to IESE host, he volunteered to take 4 of us to 4 different places at 1 am in the morning . IESE Barcelona host students clearly reflected the culture of the school and great initiative.

The weather in Barcelona was great , like sunny summer where one might be tempted to go to beach but no we had to attend the conference. The next 2 days were quite rich in content and topic.

We could attend 3 conference each day and each conference had 4 speakers. There were 3 conference going parallely. Therefore at the end of 2 days we had 9 panel sessions with 72 speakers.

The topic ranged from micro-finance to wind energy. I was fascinated by the social enterpreneurship initiative by Ashoka and Endeavor and some other organization such as Habitaem and Trestle group.

Lot of networking went during 2 days, we not only met with students from IESE, LBS, ESADE but also could network with professionals from industry such as Citibank, Deloitte etc.

We were lucky as we could be part of festival in which sellers from Gracia area distribute candies to people living around.

Barcelona is known for its night life, specially restaurant, discos were full and peppy with flamboyant music. We had a chance to hurt our legs during the 2 days of intensive dancing :))))

Globally it was well organized conference and Barcelona welcome was great during this part of the year. We could feel during and while leaving Barcelona was one common thing and that was
this city does rock!!!!! That compelled me to keep the title of the post as ''Barcelona Rock''.

Please see the video of our trip and enjoy!!!!!!!!!
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4989272418180913477

Cheers
Gajendra

International Women's Day 2007

In honor of International Women's Day 2007 on today March 8th, I would like to express my appreciation to all you beautiful and exemplary women of the January 07 intake.

MBAs' Leadership

As the end of my MBA is looming in the future, it is time to think about things I learned. And one recurrent theme during the year has been Leadership. Vision of leadership, virtual leadership, leadership awards…..and this is what I understood.

Introspect yourself, Expose yourself, Be courageous !

It seems that in our narcissist societies people are eagerly looking for recognition, visibility, and seeking for 15 minutes of celebrity. Some of you want to be a leader, and then, do you really think that you will become a leader only by learning tips and tricks from your professors and from their guests ? Of course not ! Leadership is not to be found outside but from inside. Each of you, what ever your age & background, is a potential leader. You were born with it , now you have to make your passion surface through a meiotic experience, in your job, in your family, today or later, with the help of the great people you will meet.

Why your passion ? Because, for me, a leader is someone passionate, a person who wants to change the perception of reality or ideas of others, makes them dream, makes them achieve things they never had thought possible. Someone who is different, someone who is courageous.

Have you noticed that our perception of reality considerably influences the way we react when facing problems ? Imagine yourself driving your car on the highway. Suddenly, a car accident happens just 100 meters ahead. Most of people will hit the cars as they focused on it instead of looking where they could drive their car. It is the same thing with issues that seem impossible to overcome to many people. As a leader, you have to step back, control your emotions to analyze steadily situations, and then go forward, be passionate and use your emotions to bring others with you. Expose yourself, be courageous.

Can you lead people without making decisions, without taking any risk ? Definitely not. A leader is to change the world, how could it be done without choosing? You can fail, but who has never failed ? What is important is to bounce and try again, to change your objectives, but never your values, your believes. Act, do not undergo change. Do not be afraid, change brings opportunities to learn, improve and grow. And what is true for you is also true for people you are responsible for. A leader needs to make them responsible for their actions, be in charge of their future and at the end, help them to grow. Expose yourself, be courageous.

Why would people die for you ? Trust, security, presence in hard times is what is required from a leader. You have to bring people security, like a father with his kids. Be honest, tell the truth to people as strong and lasting relationships rely only on trust. Just imagine a CEO facing and fighting with his employees against low cost labor companies competition: “Yes some of you will have to leave, but imagine you after company’s reorganization, enjoying your success in our fierce competitive world!” “ I will be there with you, we will fight together and succeed”. Expose yourself, be courageous.

Emotions are a double edge sword for a leader. You have to control them in order to make the right decisions, but you also need them to convince, motivate and fill with enthusiasm your team, your friends, your family. When you are angry, when something is revolting you, say it! Words remains words; Your ideas, your convictions might just go from your mouth to their brains and not from your heart to their heart. Only emotions achieve that! Again pay attention to the fact that people will believe you only if you are really passionate, only if you are completely, definitely, deeply convinced by what you say. That’s why you must discover what drives you and where you want to be as you will convince others only if you are convinced yourself. What do you really want? Change our world? Leave a track? Teach others? Bring others with you?

Could it be that after all? Will you be a leader just because you are passionate? No, again. There is no leader without the others. How will you address their needs, their fears if you do not know these? A leader listens to his/her feelings, of the others’ feeling, as a leader proposes a vision, a solution to people difficulties. You need to be prepared to listen. Introspect yourself, be courageous.

Now that you have found this alter ego, passionate, willing to fight to protect and to help your people…you have to realize that being a leader is also being responsible. What about Milosevic? Yes, he and his people committed atrocities! But he was a leader who stood up against harassments Serbian communities suffered in some parts of the country. He was there and made their pain his, and promised to protect them. Therefore beware of your responsibility ! Again, you need to understand why you want this authority: to manipulate, to humiliate, or to change the world for the benefit of Human being. Introspect yourself, be courageous.

Your life is not only professional, you have also a family. Too many professional success stories are counterbalanced by family disasters. Home leadership is less valued by our developed societies, but this remains the core of our responsibility. As a father and mother you are leaders for your children. Stand by them, be present, make them grow, make them be passionate and be the leaders of the next generation (or do not conceive them!) Introspect yourself, be courageous.

Today, I wrote this and I do not even know how you will perceived it. I took a risk . Do you believe it was easy ? I was passionate, exposed myself and I hope, convinced each of you that you will find this alter ego inside, willing to do the good, willing to change our world.

Barcelona....and our Social responsibility

This month started with the Doing Good Doing Well conference.

It was great to meet people who share the same expectations. I regret that some interesting conferences were overlapping, but wait and see as IESE might broadcast the videotaped conferences.

I attended the conference about Nuclear Energy. I guess that IESE wanted to generate a debate about energy source. But this conference was a little bit controversial. I ma not a pro nuclear, for sure, but the charismatic anti nuclear panelist was a little bit to "emotional" for us. It might be interesting for a show but what about MBA students. We have our convictions but we are also businessmen "trained" to take decisions based on figures. I do not mean that we should take our decisions only based on figures but at the same time it helps to dispassionate the debate and solve the problem together instead of wasting our time and energy in debates.

My personal opinion is that you can not avoid any solution.
Coal is necessary for developing countries even if this create pollution. 7 out 10 most polluted cities are in china due to their Highly sulfured coal, but at the same time they need an increasing energy capacity today to sustain their growth. I do not want to stigmatize China or Brazil deforesting, but if they are not part of the solution we will not be able to solve our GLOBAL warming problem.

To come back to the Nuclear conference, guest argued on figures, about probability...and at the end most of the attendees where confused. Sunk cost, financial cost, marginal cost...were mixed and not justified or explained. On one hand we must admit that for Areva or utilities, production and distribution of energy is their business and they re not prepared to commit suicide. On the other hand if you not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. What does that mean, Well, instead of blaming utilities or big energetic group, we should encourage them to be part of future, through investment in New technologies, thanks their knowledge of their customers and thanks to their financial resources. Imagine Iberdrola developing a new business consisting in installing and managing in each home a 20 m2 solar plant. Decentralized and secured source of supply....no need anymore for costly and unaesthetic hyper grids. Investment that you could dedicate to grounded European grid interconnections or Offshore wind farms (www.airtricity.com). To the guest from Greenpeace I would say that I appreciate is charismatic convictions, his high dedication and desire to change people perceptions, however It is time to work together to get something done now.

I believe that he tremendous financial liquidity is a chance as many investments can be done in environment, but remember the Internet bubble. After the crash it was impossible to finance any internet project. So what about the Global warming/renewable energy bubble? We have to be wise in our investment and select only financial institutions that are used to long term investments. If not all what will have been done, will have been done for nothing. We need to invest on new technologies to improve renewable energy efficiency. But remember, the technology is tool and a tool needs a vision. A vision that Government, Corporation but more surely entrepreneurs have and accomplish. (www.igniteinovations.com)

I would say that Nuclear energy is necessary for now. Wastes (represent a cost and bet on future), security (zero risk does not exist), decommissioning cost (not know for sure), financial cost (3 Billions€ each),...are necessary drawbacks we have to live with today, may be not in the future. I will not give more figures here as people from both sides might disagree with. You know how we can cook easily figures and let them demonstrate whatever you want (remember you management control class with professor Hoffjan ). But I would like to share with you one website as you might find there some food for thoughts : www.efcf.com/e/reports/...One question, what is the cost of batteries - energetic and environmental. Again it is all about externalities....What is the safest, cleanest and cheapest energy ? It is the one you do not consume! I guess that building every day more power capacity is as clever as creating an anti-anti missile...This is a long term vision. Indeed today we do not have the luxury to invest all our investments in education or close all the State Owned Entreprise in China.

If I could conclude this first post I would say that we need an energy mix, a decentralized and flexible production system which means that we can all contribute to our future. Areva is buying RePower (German Wind mill manufacturer), well great! Let's work all together.

How to enjoy an week-end in France

For the first time since the beginning of the MBA program, the chance smiled to me : a 3-days week-end to spend with my family!
Useless to say that it was absolutely great!

With the help of www.abritel.fr I found without dificulty a small cottage in Normandy. Some details which could help to get a more precise idea: 120 euros for 2 nights, 35m2 for 5 people, sheets and towels provided (very rare for a cottage rent). 200 km far from Paris, in 2 hours we arrived in Bonneville sur Touques. 8 km far from Deauville and 20 km from Honfleur, two very known cities on the French Atlantic border.

The time was rainy however enjoyable.

We walked a lot along the beaches, the wind was really strong and cold.

Another Week of Challenge & Feeling of Greeness

Its Friday and soon we are heading for an exciting weekend. Several reasons to celebrate that..there were 2 exams one after another, one contest to complete and for 2 groups to present their case on the same day as their exam. It is really interesting to know how differnt group dynamicsa and collaboration worked during last one week.

This is what MBA teaches us. To keep the cool, stay connected with our batchmates, collaborate and continue. This is just the beginning 14 more months of challenges and excitement ahead.

At this point I stop and like other's I look forward to have some quality time during the weekend... And before it comes to an end, I’d like to organize an appropriate birthday celebration for Kiran, Sunjay and Christophe.

I want to know which type of event you would prefer, for now we have two options:
-“Apero” style: similar to what we did last time, it includes snacks, drinks and we’ll add birthday cake. Cost: 4 euros per person.

-Lunch: pizza, salad, drinks, cake. About 7-8 euros per person.

Please use the poll to cast your vote and feel free to comment here in the blog if you have any suggestions type='text'>African Week Dinner

After another hectic week of studies, assignments, presentation and so on....it was time to chill little bit with everyone at Hall D'honneur .

It was final day of African week and it was celebrated with excellent dinner and colorful events.
The event was marked by fashion show and later on by spectacular belly dance performance.
phew!!!!!!Great to see emerging models within the MBA.

To win the Maroc ticket various contestants had to dance on African music. It was interesting as it was an improptu presentation. Ofcourse we had our esteemed judges to decide the best dancer and the winner.

The whole evening was full of fun and excitement. And finally it was dance time!!!!!!!

Another event of cultural exchange. This is what I like about MBA . It gives you an opportunity to learn, learn and learn something new each day.

Even after the event was finished at Hall D'honneur, the party continued at PIANO BAR until late in the morning.

Another week came to an end with a positive feeling as already lot of cultural exchange had taken place in few hours of time.

Please click on the link below to see the pics from the event

My Public Shoebox

Cheers
Gaj

Birthday Celebration -Chilling it out

After hectic week of case studies, strategy, finance and accounting it was time to take a short break from studies and get together at Piano Bar for celebrating Pedro and Bertrand Birthday.

Made me realize that days are going to be like that in near future and such short breaks can create an atmosphere with which we can look forward to the next step!!

It was good because we could take some time together and laugh , enjoy !! Integration Weekend

On 18th of Jan, finally we call could successfully complete the business simulation game. The feeling was fantastic. It was not about who won and who lost... It was about what we learned from 4 days of continous work on strategy, team building, JV/alliances & explorations. Based upon feedback from　several groups it came out to be a nice experience. Business simulation activity also gave us chance to interact with all our classmates in one universe.
Overall a very positive experience of working closely and leaving some +ve impacts.

After wonderful experience of Business simulation....guess what??? 3 days of integration weekend with past MBA batch students. Most of the people are off for the integration weekend which will include ski and lot of other activities.

Good weekend to all!!
Cheers
Gajendra

ups and downs

I can say this day was like a roller coster.... It all started off on the wrong foot: bad sleep, woke up late. Journée de merde...
Off to start the day in the class and there I have a big disappointment looking at the results of Negosim for Period 1. A punch in the gut... Not as easy as it seems this little game. I can say this is difficult. Fortunately we have the best group.
josh is the world expert for negotiations with Malaysia: setting up plants and negotiating contracts for goods (even if sometimes we wishes we had not contracted!!)
stefano wants to understand what happened. His face turns a bit stern and he dives into the spreadsheets. After a while his smile comes back and we ready for another round at bad business
jeanine wants to keep our plants in Japan, but so far she has spoken for those poor japanese workers with too soft a voice to be heard by the us eagerly working their (non-existent) profitability and prospective markets. Women will make a better world !!!
I am wondering how can we work so hard at destroying our business and blaming ourselves for it after each session.

Anyway, it is a great experience. I think I will pay more attention in the future to accounting and strategy classes. I thought it was just common sense delivered in business suits for a s---tload of cash. What a waste. I think again now! Maybe I just had too many years in IT.

The iPod really saved the day. And I now realized that i have not opened it yet!!! Time to open the box and say a big THANK YOU to those Apple folks (I can' t remember why I thought a mp3 player would always be better then this gadget for slick New Yorkers who would never understood anything about technology ;-) A round of applause for the Dean and those in the faculty who pushed for that project. Now we will be listening to podcasts in class and we will watch movies in Negosim sessions! Better than burning share holders money...
Here are some pictures I took during the delivery session:
Simon so happy about it because he knows his commuting will be less boring every morning. Simulation game called as "Negosim" helps each team to enter into business deals, negotiation, strategy development and finally the hardest part of the game is to take right decisions. It is interesting to see how our idea develops into concrete and solid stategic decision.

It is very interesting to see that each activity which we are involved is giving us an ample oppotunity to interact with other MBA participant and share our view points. We are also able to reflect our ideas and change the group dynamics. Business simulation game which will last for another 3 days has put all of us to think think and think......

At the end of the first quarter some of the teams are beaming with confidence and others are trying to understand what went wrong in the whole decision making process.

Another 5 rounds to go and the situation may look different than it looked at the beginning.

All the best to all the teams

Cheers
Gajendra

First few days in HEC

The check in procedure for the Jan 07 MBA class started on 4th Jan 07 with people checking in from all over the world.

The student affairs and the Expansiel building staff took good care of students . The check in process went off smoothly.

We had a chance to meet with other participants on 5th Jan. Thanks to the current student government body who organize welcome drinks for us. It gave an opportunity to know other participants. Meet students from Sept 07 batch and exchange views on several topics.

6th of Jan for the sake of students who came from outside France, the student body organized a trip to few shopping malls. Later on in the evening we had a chance to dine together at Italian restaurant. It was nice to meet once again other participants dicuss about our backgrounds. Our future directions and so on.....Some language exchange went on. Specially Korean, Chinese, Spanish, Bulgarian, Hindi, French...etc We could learn few words from each other.

We all landed up after the dinner in the Piano bar which has become a favorite place for most of us to hang on. Once again fun filled discussions...exchange of ideas. We all had chance to meet also exchange students from U.S , India...It was nice to see their perspective on various topics.

I am not sure what time other finished. I left Piano bar at 2 am . With a feeling that first 3 days have already started to give a lot of perspective as to how future is going to be. I am sure when classes will start we will have better understanding of each other and we will be able to work as good team, positively contributing towards the assignments and learning from each other.

Cheers and see you all soon

Gajendra

See you in September

Hi all,

Two news from Xue.

The first one is I might not join you in January for France Embassy does not issue my visa nor return my passport. I was in HEC campus last saturday and met few Sept'06 batch students. I could also visit the Expansiel building where most of us will reside. It was sunday evening and it was quite calm. Felt at one point of the time that somedays are going to be silent like this :)))

The good thing is that we all know our schedule ahead of time and I am sure this will give us all an opportunity to visualize ourselves in the program and plan little better.

So are you ready to go into intricacies of finances, delicacies of economics and diversity of the students????

For me the answer is "Yes" and I am sure it is same for most of us!!

Cheers.....

22nd Nov 2006 : First Dinner of Jan'07 Batchmates

Hello All,

It gives me(India) immense pleasure to talk about our first meeting in Paris.

Jeanine who organized the event, could not come due to problem which was unforeseen. We all thank her for proactive approach !!

When I arrived at the restaurant I came across Pedro (Portugal) and his partner(Portugal). Later on we moved to the dinner table where already simon(Newzealand) and Christine (Hongkong) were waiting for others. Later on Laurent(France) , came with his partner (Bulgaria).

The evening began with casual exchange about each other. It was interesting to know that we all came from different backgrounds. While Pedro is in Quality field, Simon is from Telecomunication and Laurent in software field. I am from automotive field and could recognize the kind of background of each one. The best part was that we were 7 people and 6 nationalities.

Simon came from newzealand some 7 months ago and successfully got into HEC.

We discussed on differnt topics starting from the life in Paris...to .necessity of maps in Paris....Car pooling topic came up also. I am sure such synergies to help each other will come more and more. For me it was interesting to know about the Green wine from Portugal. May be common for others, I was new to this green wine concept. Laurent kind of teased me about "Indian Wine". It is my next project to research on Indian wine!! Thanks Laurent.

Second topic which was interesting was about Indian Beedi and how enterpreneurship is possible in this area!! Long way to go HEC International Team...

Third interesting story was about Christine Piano selling. She sold her Grand Piano 30 mins before she was leaving for Paris. Interesting!!

We also start discussing about language!! why not?
..Chinese, Japanese, Bulgarian, Russian, Spanish and other languages similarities and differences came up.....

All these was smeared with delicious white n red wine and individual dishes.. I was surprised to know that I am not the only one who like Creme Brulee:))))))))

You can see the enthusiasm in the pics

2007 January Intake - our first dinner event & the organizer frustration

Hi all,

This blog seems the right place to share my first (sad) experience as future HEC student!

The forum on the HEC Intranet allowed us to introduce ourselves to each other and show our eagerness to join the 2007 January intake. The idea of a dinner before January arises amongst our forum exchanges. I took the initiative to organize the first dinner for those who were present in the Paris area. I proposed the “La Rotonde de la Muette” restaurant. The date of Wednesday 22nd of November was accepted by 8 people (partners included).

As a mother of two children (4 and 7), I organized very carefully myself and my family for this first HEC event. In the first place, my husband could look after the children. Finally, he was very busy with his work. Fortunately, one of my friends agreed some days before the dinner to look after the children during the dinner.

But in the evening traffic jam of the 22nd of November, when driving to my home, she had a car accident. Fortunately for her, the accident produced only car injuries. But she was shocked and unable to drive or to do something else…

I had one hour to find another baby-sitter. I checked the schedule of all my known baby-sitters or friends in the area. Nobody was available to replace my unfortunate friend and look after the children. I passed the news too Gajendra who tried also to help me. Unfortunately, despite all efforts, there was no way to participate to our first dinner!

I hope that in this moment Gajendra, Pedro, Laurent, Simon, Christine and their partners are enjoying this first meeting and dinner of HEC 2007 January intake students. Simon is surely taking some photos which he will lately share with us. As promised, Gajendra is also going to organize another dinner, next week maybe. Meantime my children are sleeping; they need a good night rest to face the next school day.

With this story, I am asking myself if I would be able to manage my future MBA studies and my family… And I am answering back: of course yes! One difficulty with no solution doesn't mean difficulties without solution all the time. As for my current job, I have to find the right balance between my two lives: as a mother and a professional (and sooner as a student). And with the best organization of the world, the uncertainty could always happen... and I have to cope with it even if frustrated.

See you very soon my future classmates! And I am sure that during our student life together, I will have your comprehension and support for this kind of situation.

Kind regards.
